My Final Comments…
This will likely be my final written report to you as President of SDASCOE. I have to say it has
been an honor and a privilege to serve as your President. The past four years have been great
but they did have their highs and lows. It was a great experience and I will miss the interaction
with all of you.
There is one thing I want to stress and that is SDASCOE is about all of us. This great
association is about the dedicated individuals who agree to serve in the various capacities on our
behalf. These past four years it has been my honor and privilege to work with these dedicated
individuals who have served as your directors, your program chairs and as your SDASCOE
officers. I want to thank each and every one of them for agreeing to serve and for their
dedicated service on our behalf. A side note though is you really do get to know too much (TMI)
about some people.
I would like to cover a couple of issues in my last article. First, I would like to encourage each of
you to think about getting involved in SDASCOE. This is your association. In the coming
months, you may be asked to step up and run for a position of director, or officer and I ask you to
think about this request before you say no to them. Also, the new President will be asking some
of you to fill the program chair positions in SDASCOE. I remember when I went through this
process as a newly elected President. I remember thinking how do I ask someone to serve and
how do I explain to them what is expected of them in the position they are being asked to fill. I will
admit it was a little difficult but I have to say I did not get a lot of “no’s” as most said they were
humbled by being asked. This is why Peggy Groen has been working on putting together a set
of duties and position description handbooks. It was our vision that this would help with this
process. To those individuals who took the chance and stepped up these past few years, thanks
for the outstanding job you did for all of us. So, if you are contacted, please hear them out
before you answer. One thing I have learned, through this experience, is there is a wealth of
talent and knowledge in our ranks. Please think about what they are asking of you and of course
it is in all of our best interests is they get you to put your talents to work for all of us.
My final topic is the National Data base. I am going to put in one last plug for this process. The
usage of the government computer system is getting more limited all the time. We need for
everyone to submit their name, address and e-mail address to Dianna Shafer so it can be
forwarded on to the National Data Base. Why do you need to this? In the future, this will
probably be the only way NASCOE will be able to communicate with us. I would encourage our
members to submit their information so they will stay informed. If you have any question on this
process, please feel free to contact Dianna Shafer or Lori Jones.
How does one say thank you to a membership like the one of SDASCOE? I am not sure, but I will
be forever humbled by the trust and support you placed in me when you first elected me your
Vice President and then as your President. It has been an incredible experience and one I will
never forget. Thanks William Chase for asking me to get involved again. Everyone keep in
touch and remember this is your association so get involved.
