December 16, 2009 Alert that was sent out with concerns on the HEALTH CARE REFORM – just under 640 alerts were issued across the US (20%). This alert went to Senate only.
H.R. 958 addresses a problem existing in the Federal Employee Retirement System (FERS). Employees working under the Civil Service system have long been credited additional service time for their unused sick leave upon retirement. The CSRS system encourages employees to save their accrued sick leave. However, FERS employees do not have this opportunity and forfeited all unused sick leave upon retirement. The disparity between the two systems has lead FERS employees to use sick leave prior to their retirement so the benefit is not lost. This has been described in several federally sponsored studies as the FERS flu. All federal employees, both CSRS and FERS, who wisely use their time should be rewarded for their dedication and allowed to count this credit time.
This bill was revamped and the end result from your help is that a bill was passed granting credited for unused sick leave to be gradually phased in within in 4 years for full credit of unused sick leave.
