Awards & Scholarship Committee Reports
Larry Somsen, Chairperson
SDASCOE Spring Board Meeting
Crossroads Hotel, Huron SD
January 26 & 27th, 2011

The NASCOE Website for Awards and Scholarship has been revised to include all the changes
made last fall. The biggest change is that now nominations may be submitted electronically or
mailed by hard copy using the forms located at this Website. I encourage all members to visit this
site and review the full booklet which lists all the awards and scholarships that are available to
members and the application and nomination instructions.

No Distinguished Service Award nominations for any of the three categorizes have been received
yet from any SDASCOE member. However, the deadline to make these nominations is February
1st, 2011. An email was sent out on 1-13-2011 and again on 1-26-2011 requesting members to
make a nomination for these awards.

No Student Scholarship or NASCOE Member’s Scholarship applications have been submitted yet
this year but I have heard of some members who have students working on making applications.
Scholarship applications need to be submitted to me as the State Scholarship Chairperson
before the deadline of March 1st, 2011. An email was sent out on 1-26-2011 requesting
applications.

The Professional Improvement Award is available to recognize any member who has taken
sufficient advantage of educational opportunities available to them outside of the usual job
requirement that has a definite relationship to our profession. There is no competition or
deadline for this award.

The Extra Mile Award is available to recognize any member or their children who have “gone the
extra mile” for their community, their church, their school, or their state, area, or national
association. There is no competition or deadline for this award

I will be sending out and email in middle of February asking for sick leave hours from SDASCOE
members who have reached the 1000, 1500, 2000, and 2500 hour levels so awards can be
presented at the State Convention in April.

I would like to invite any member who is interested to attending the awards Committee meeting at
the State Convention and share any new ideas you may have or make suggestions for the
Awards & Scholarship programs.

Respectfully submitted,

/s/ Larry Somsen
