The 2011 SDASCOE Awards & Scholarship Committee Meeting was called to order by Chairperson, Larry Somsen. Six members were present. The following information was review and discuss during this committee meeting:
One Distinguished Service Award nomination was received this year in South Dakota. Joseph Schultz, CED from Charles Mix County, was nominated and declared the winner of the South Dakota 2011 Community Service Award. Mr. Schultz was also recently declared the winner at the Northwest Area Award and will now be eligible to win the NASCOE award to be determined later this summer. Discussing was held as to how to receive more nominations in the future for each one of the three available awards. South Dakota has many members who are deserving of these awards but are not being nominated. The new nominating forms on the NASCOE website make it very easy for members to make these nominations. The Chairperson will try to use the newsletter and email earlier to encourage members to make nomination for all three Distinguished Service Awards for 2012.
Six NASCOE Scholarships Applications were received in South Dakota from children of SDASCOE members for 2011. All applications were very qualified applicants and were forwarded on to the NWA for Judging in February 2011. NWA Scholarship Chairperson, Mary Johnson announced to those attending the meeting that Renita Goetz, daughter of Eleanor Goetz, Lead PT in Walworth County, was the winner of the $1,500 NWA NASCOE Scholarship for 2011. The Chairman said he was happy with the number of application we had in 2011 and encouraged all eligible students to apply next year. A discussion was had as to the possibility of awarding a local SDASCOE scholarship in the future. Funding would be an issue but the Chairman will check into the possible.
