Hello, I am Larry Somsen. I have agreed to serve as the Chairman of the Awards & Scholarship Committee for the next year. I would like to introduce myself to my fellow SDASCOE membership who may not know me. I have been the CED in Kingsbury County for the past 23 years and am married to Marlene and have four grown children and 4 grandchildren. I have been a proud member of SDASCOE for all 23 years.
Nominations for the Distinguished Service Awards are now being accepted thru February 1, 2011. It is time for members of SDASCOE to start thinking of nominating a deserving NASCOE member for one of the three Distinguished Service Awards available each year. Distinguished Service awards are available for Service to SDASCOE / NASCOE, Service to Agriculture, and Service to Community. I know that South Dakota has many NASCOE members who are deserving of one of these awards. Please take the time to nominate your co-worker who are deserving of one of these awards. I would like to see several nominations in each category if at all possible.
Detailed eligibility information for each of the three Distinguished Service awards along with the required fillable application forms can be found at the NASCOE Website at: http://nascoe.org/Awards.aspx. Please complete the nomination forms in their entirety and return the forms to me prior to February 1, 2011 deadline.
NASCOE has two Scholarship Programs available to NASCOE Members for themselves, their children, spouse or legal dependant(s), providing that all other eligibility requirements are met.
The traditional NASCOE Scholarship Program is provided to the children, legal dependants, and spouse of eligible NASCOE Members. This award may only be used to defray expenses for a student at an accredited school. Applicants must be a NASCOE member, member's spouse, member's child, or member's legal dependent. The NASCOE member's dues must be paid and membership kept current for the past 5 years, or since becoming a permanent FSA County Office Employee. The evaluation criteria are based on ability, incentive assistance, and other personal characteristics. Nominations for Scholarships are competitive. NASCOE scholarship program applications found on the NASCOE website must be used and submitted to me prior to March 1, 2011. All eligible applications will be forwarded to the Area Judging committee to determine a Area winner of a $1,500.00 award. The National winner is selected from Area winners, and the National winner receives $2,500.00. The time schedule contained in the NASCOE Awards/Scholarships booklet must be followed.
Members of NASCOE, have a NASCOE Members Continuing Education Scholarship Program available to them. This is a special NASCOE Scholarship award that will be awarded to NASCOE Members that are taking additional college credits to further enhance their careers within the Farm Service Agency (FSA). Each Area will be allowed to award one scholarship winner $200.00 to broaden their portfolio for adult education courses to enhance and advance their careers within FSA.
Please check out the Awards and Scholarship web pages on the NASCOE website for all the details for all available awards and Scholarships for this coming year.
