President's Report

As 2010 comes to an end I think of two important accomplishments for
SDASCOE/NASCOE - FERS employees compensated for sick leave at retirement and health
insurance coverage for students through age 26. Those accomplishments have taken several
years and involved the work of many people and agencies.

Without your support through dues, the PAC, CAPWIZ, Negotiations,
Legislative Conferences and National Conventions these things wouldn't have happened. For
that I thank you!

I can't help but think if all employees were members and if all members took part in PAC and
CAPWIZ it may have happened sooner.

This summer two of our grandchildren were hanging out with us at the farm. They were riding in
their Red Flyer Wagon, I was the muscle pulling them. We went down a lane north of our house
that's lined with trees forming a beautiful green canopy. One or two days a year (I don't know
their migration pattern) there is an overwhelming amount of Monarch butterflies in that lane.
Luckily, that was one of those days. As we got in the midst of them, our 5 year old granddaughter
got out of the wagon and was dancing among the butterflies talking very softly to them. Our
grandson, 18 months, just sat there in total, innocent awe. His mouth was open in an ooohhh, his
eyes were wide open and he sat so still (in fact I've never seen him that still while awake). The
butterflies would land on both of them then flutter away. I've seen the butterflies before and
thought it was really neat, but never with that total, innocent awe like our grandson.

My wish for all of you and your families this holiday season and for 2011 is to be able to see
things as if it were the first time, with total, innocent awe!
