SDASCOE
2011 Fall Board Meeting October 13 & 14, 2011

The Awards Committee is pleased to report the Joseph Schultz was the National NASCOE Award
winner for Distinguished Service Award for Service to Community for 2011.

Nominations for the 2012 Distinguished Service Awards are now being accepted thru February 1,
2012. Members should start thinking of nominating a deserving NASCOE member for one of the
three Distinguished Service Awards available each year. Distinguished Service awards are
available for Service to SDASCOE / NASCOE, Service to Agriculture, and Service to Community. I
know that South Dakota has many NASCOE members who are deserving of one of these awards.
Please take the time to nominate your co-workers who are deserving of one of these awards by
using the forms on the NASCOE website. Detailed eligibility information for each of the three
Distinguished Service awards along with the required fillable application forms can be found at
the NASCOE Website at: http://nascoe.org/Awards.aspx .  Please complete the nomination forms
in their entirety and return the forms to me prior to the February 1, 2012 deadline.

NASCOE also has two Scholarship Programs available to NASCOE Members for themselves,
their children, spouse or legal dependant(s), providing that all other eligibility requirements are
met. The first scholarship program is the traditional NASCOE Scholarship Program is available to
the children, legal dependants, and spouse of eligible NASCOE Members. One $1500
scholarship will be awarded in the Northwest Area. The winner will then be eligible for the National
NASCOE $2500 scholarship.

The second scholarship is the NASCOE Members Continuing Education Scholarship Program
available to NASCOE members that are taking additional college credits to further enhance their
careers within the Farm Service Agency (FSA). Each Area will be allowed to award one
scholarship winner $200.00 to broaden their portfolio for adult education courses to enhance
and advance their careers within FSA. Please check out the Awards and Scholarship web pages
on the NASCOE website for all the details for all available awards and Scholarships for this
coming year. The time schedule contained in the NASCOE Awards/Scholarships booklet must be
followed.

The Chairperson has some concern with the need to update the Awards & Scholarship Job
Description presently listed in the SDASCOE Handbook.  The main concern is who is responsible
to obtain the names and awards for the Years of Service Awards presented at the State
Convention. The current Job Description does not list this as a duty of the Awards Chairperson.
This causes some anxious moments at last years State Convention.  A proposed Job Description
was presented to the Directors for their consideration.

Respectfully submitted by,
Larry Somsen, Chairperson of Awards and Scholarship Committee
